It Takes Time
You need to know what you're getting into. I'm not going to sugarcoat it, so let's be real, this is going to take time. Getting results out of something always does, it's a shitty fact of life. Unless you're the "Hawk Tuah" girl, you've gotta work hard for your fame.
The Results We've Seen From Consistent Video Posting
We've got a realtor friend who's been in the business for years and now owns his own brokerage.
He's been hugely successful in his area, and everyone knows him.
I had a conversation yesterday with him about his business. I asked him what's worked the best for his marketing, and he used one word;
CONSISTENCY
Now, in the real estate niche, that consistency means a lot of things. But in this case, we're going to focus on his success with consistent social media videos that he posts on his own.
He reported that:
Whenever he posts a video and goes to the grocery store, he can't get out of there for an hour because of everyone stopping to chat about his latest video
If he were to do a HUGE marketing push (bigger than what he's doing now), then he would do video production for all the big ones- TikTok, Facebook and Instagram.
The reason he does this is because he remains top of mind for people. "Oh, there he is again."
Now, I know what you're thinking.
"Ok that's great, but how is that getting him more customers?"
I will tell you right now.
He becomes IMPOSSIBLE to ignore by constantly popping up at the top of everyone's feed as soon as they login. What this does is create momentum.
The momentum takes a couple months to pick up, and then pretty soon before you know it, someone who saw his videos 4 months ago needs to sell their house. And who do they think of?
You guessed it. Our realtor friend.
Now he's got a consistent "leads machine" rolling, getting him new leads on a weekly basis who feel comfortable to strike up a conversation with him because they feel like they already know him.
He made himself like some kind of an ear worm impossible to forget- and he did it just by using consistent video.
The thing is, as business people, we want immediate results from everything we do. You are not the Hawk Tuah girl. You need to work hard for your fame.
Give everything you do AT LEAST 1 month to settle into effect, if not more. Chill out, be patient, work hard, do more than everyone else, and you will benefit.
PRO TIP: Do you want more success with your marketing but can't hire anyone? Cancel your netflix account. Seriously.
Instead of watching a show at the end of the day, do your marketing. Suck it up.
Something else to consider about our realtor friend:
He is not posting informational, boring content. He is having lots of fun.
He is posting funny bits of comedy with his family, while out fishing, out on vacation, at a home taking a look before listing it, telling funny stories from being a realtor and making pop culture references that are hilarious, among many others.
He is switching up the topics, making them funny, but always keeping it relatively relevant to his area, his values, and being a realtor.
And he is absolutely killing it right now.
This is less of a step-by-step guide and more of a real talk blog
I'm sure you were looking for more of a step-by-step process for what to do, how to use a smartphone as a camera, etc.
I get it- but I also know that 99% of people aren't going to follow the steps. They're going to say, "yawn this is boring, can you just jump to the part where I get more customers?"
With that in mind, I will link to a bunch of helpful resources at the VERY BOTTOM of this blog post so that you can dig in to the technical side of things a bit more. (If you're that 1% person) 🤣
PS: You can get by just fine at first without having to learn too much about lighting, exposure, aputure, etc. In fact, it's BEST to start simple because it makes it easier for you to stick with it.
Let's Summarize What We Learned From the Realtor Friend:
Don't overthink it: press record and go. You're going to suck for your first 100 videos. So get over it and get your 100 videos out of the way, ASAP.
Post every day or every second day. (I'm not the best with this, but every time we do it, we benefit a lot!)
Do batching if that works better for you. I think our realtor friend just posts every day in the moment, but that doesn't work for everyone. Pick 1 day/week that you can batch your videos (meaning film them all in one go).
This works really well for Business to Customer selling, but it also works well for Business to Business selling.
Do it for 3 months before giving up on it. He's been doing it for years.
You don't need fancy equipment to get started. Just start with your iphone and your camera app.
In the very beginning, don't blame the algorithm for your shitty reach- blame your shitty videos for your shitty reach. Learn from them and get better. (ok we didn't learn this from the realtor, it just kind of came to me haha)
WE'VE GOT TO ADDRESS THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM:
The myth of going "viral".
Let's get real- don't make going viral your goal. It's not going to help you.
Sorry to break the news. But it's also good news, because it means that it takes the pressure off of you. Don't worry about it.
Just focus on getting good enough reach (linked down below), and good enough engagement, meaning your content is landing for people. Also, it's a good sign if your account is growing rather than shrinking or plateauing.
Now Let's Get Into Some Nitty-Gritty
1. Strategy:
This is a BROAD topic. And sorry, but I simply can't cover it all in one paragraph. But I'll do my best with covering it fast.
The trick with succeeding with this is to remain top of mind without diluting your message too much.
What is your story?
What are your values?
What is your brand and how are you going to take it into consideration with every video?
WHO are you speaking to and how can you make your content relatable to them?
All of these things come naturally to some people, but others not. If it doesn't come naturally to you, don't worry; it can be learned.
2. Scripting:
It's a good idea to either make a rough or refined script. Write out each video idea, then write out a script for each one. Don't over complicate it, just take some time to write it all down on a piece of paper or a Google Docs. You can even start your content batching out with this.
After scripting it all out, make sure to edit it a few times. Our first ideas aren't always the best, so it's important to look over it before we put time into making content about it.
3. Batching or in the moment?:
The trick is to find which one works best for you. If you're spontaneous and have time during the day to film videos, by all means you may do better filming in the moment content and posting it right away. If you're a person who prefers planning, batching might be best for you.
4. Batching:
If you pick 1 day/week that works for your content creation, this is ideal. But you need to find what works for you, and what makes it easiest! If you can use this day for filming, editing and posting, this is ideal. Because then you don't have to think about it for the rest of the week.
5. In the moment:
If you are more of a spontaneous person, you can make your videos in the moment whenever it suits you. The only problem with doing it this way is that it can be easier to miss days if you get really busy.
Summary
Making videos for your business isn't complicated- it just takes time. So get off your booty and get out there to show the world how amazing your business is! Go tell your story.
Also, make it easy on yourself. Sometimes you can't post a video, and that's okay! Post a picture.
And- don't give up. BE relentlessly tenacious. Because that's how you get results. And no, it isn't easy, but it's worth it.
